Galway, Ireland – Tuesday 22nd April – SechMed, in partnership with ATU iHubs Galway, hosted a Lunch & Learn session focused on strengthening the early stages of medical device development and helping innovators understand what is required to move from idea to a structured and credible development programme.

The event took place at ATU iHubs Galway and brought together founders, researchers and engineers working across a range of interesting medtech projects. The session explored the practical steps involved in progressing a medical device beyond concept stage, with particular emphasis on planning development activities early, aligning prototype work with regulatory expectations, and avoiding common delays that arise when projects advance without the necessary internal structure in place.

Drawing on experience delivering numerous medical devices from early concept through to CE marking and FDA clearance, SechMed’s Shane MacNally and Ed Hyland shared practical lessons from guiding projects toward successful commercialisation.

Turlough Rafferty, Innovation Centre Manager at ATU iHubs, said:

“Supporting early-stage medtech innovation means connecting founders with people who have real experience of bringing devices through the full development process. It was great to welcome SechMed to ATU iHubs to share practical insights with our innovation community and highlight how early planning can make a significant difference to project success.”

Shane MacNally, CEO of SechMed, added:

“Many early device projects lose time and funding not because the idea isn’t strong, but because the development pathway isn’t clearly structured from the beginning. Our aim is to help founders put the right engineering and regulatory foundations in place early so they can realise their medical devices in the most efficient and cost-effective way possible”

The Lunch & Learn forms part of ATU iHubs’ ongoing programme supporting innovation across the West of Ireland by helping early-stage teams access industry expertise and build stronger foundations for future growth. The successful event was jointly organised by SechMed and Turlough Rafferty and Caroline Bell of ATU iHubs.
