The Galway-based MedTech company, headquartered at ATU iHub, has developed the SteriCISION® C-Section Retractor to address key challenges faced during Caesarean deliveries. The device is designed to improve surgical access, visibility and ergonomics for clinicians while helping to reduce factors that can contribute to complications during surgery.

The first clinical investigation involved five patients at Hospital Santo Tomás Querétaro in Panama, where five infants were successfully delivered using the device. The study met its primary endpoints, demonstrating the technical feasibility of the SteriCISION® Retractor while maintaining surgical access and visualisation throughout the procedures.

NUA Surgical has rapidly established itself as a leading innovator in women’s health, attracting international recognition and investment for its work in advancing maternal care.

This achievement represents an important step towards the commercialisation of the SteriCISION® C-Section Retractor and highlights the potential for homegrown innovation to address critical healthcare challenges on a global scale. With more than 30 million Caesarean sections performed worldwide each year, advancements that improve surgical safety and outcomes have the potential to benefit mothers, babies and healthcare professionals alike.

The milestone also reflects the world-class innovation environment fostered within the ATU iHub community, where ambitious companies are supported to develop breakthrough technologies with international impact.

Congratulations to the entire NUA Surgical team on this remarkable achievement and on reaching such an important stage in their mission to improve maternal health around the world.
